Spinal cord injuries due to accidents can have a devasting impact on a person’s life. Becoming completely immobile and being dependent on other people even for the smallest of tasks can be highly demoralizing. When the only option left is to learn to live with the crippling disability, the injured person and their family lose all hope. It is to such people that Dr. Kiran and his team at Vaidya Healthcare come as a bright ray of hope.

Dr. Kiran B Nair is the CEO of Vaidya Healthcare in Perumbavoor, Kerala. Vaidya Healthcare is the first of its kind to incorporate Ayurveda, yoga, physiotherapy, naturopathyacupuncture, acupressure, medicinal herbalism, chiropractic, and holistic medicine for a comprehensive approach toward complete health.

Generally, fractures in the spinal cord can occur in the cervical, thoracic or lumbar regions. Fractures of the spinal cord are categorized into three different categories on the ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) depending on the degree of impairment. Category A has a complete cut of the spinal cord with no sensory or motor function. Category B is a partial impairment with only motor functions getting affected. Category C consists of compression fractures with partial preservation of motor functions.

“Ayurveda uses Panchakarma treatments like Vasthi, which improves the neurological functions of the body”, says Dr. Kiran. The first aim of treatment at Vaidya Healthcare is to improve bladder and bowel incontinence by recovering the urine and stool sensation. The next aim is to improve the sensory and motor functions in the body. “Ayurveda offers a unique combination of muscular and neural rehabilitation which helps improve movement which might not be achieved through other medical branches,” says Dr. Kiran.

Among the many success stories of Vaidya Healthcare, Dr. Kiran remembers the case of a middle-aged truss worker who had fallen off a roof of a building. The patient, Joseph (name changed) had an AIS grade B fracture and had undergone spinal cord surgery. He had bladder, bowel incontinence, and lower limb weakness. Rather than give in to his fate Joseph approached Dr. Kiran for rehabilitation. Dr. Kiran is proud to say that since his first visit, Joseph has made incredible strides in recovering movement and sensation throughout his body. First, from being completely bedridden, he was able to sit and use a wheelchair. Later, he started walking and now he is able to do his day-to-day activities and is back at his jobs.

At Vaidya Healthcare a 6-month treatment regime is suggested for most patients. Some patients like Joseph, start showing improvements within 3-5 months, while others might require extended therapy. “It is important to continue exercise and physiotherapy after recovering muscular and neurological functions. Lack of activity might cause muscle spasms”, says Dr. Kiran.

“Complete recovery after a spinal cord injury is not possible but we can definitely aim for at least 70% recovery in most patients”, says Dr. Kiran. The multiple success stories that Vaidya Healthcare has seen make one thing clear, a broken spine does not necessarily mean a broken life. Dr. Kiran and his team will help you get back on your feet and live life to the fullest.
